Idoia Villanueva Ruiz (born July 17, 1980 in Pamplona ) is a Spanish politician ( Podemos ). Villanueva was 2015-2019 Senator of the Spanish Senate , since the European elections in 2019 she is a member of the European Parliament as part of the GUE / NGL Group .

Idoia Villanueva Ruiz was born on July 17, 1980 in Pamplona. After completing school, she studied computer science at the University of the Basque Country , followed by a master's degree in business management at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid . After completing her academic training, she worked in the field of product management and development for over ten years.

In 2015, Podemos and other smaller parties nominated Villanueva in the Parliament of Navarre for one of the seats in the Spanish Senate, which she also won. She held her position as senator from 2015 to 2019. In the upper chamber of the Spanish Parliament she was, among other things, spokeswoman for the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on European Affairs.

In February 2017, Villanueva was promoted to the management team (known as the “coordination council”) of Podemos, where she replaced Ángela Ballester .

In autumn 2018, Podemos announced that the parties Izquierda Unida , Catalunya en Comú and Barcelona en Comú would stand in the list of " Unidas Podemos Cambiar Europa" in the 2019 European elections. Villanueva ran for 4th place on the list. The list connection gained almost 10 percent and thus 6 of the 54 Spanish mandates, so that Villanueva moved in directly. She joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . For her group she is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and an alternate member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety .
