Igala is a yoruboid language of the Volta-Niger language group , which is spoken by the Igala ethnic group in Nigeria .
In 1989, an estimated 800,000 people spoke Igala, mainly in the states of Kogi , Delta, and Edo . Dialects of the language are Ebu, Idah, Ankpa, Dekina, Ogugu , Ibaji, and Ife. The ethnic groups of the Agatu, Idoma and Bassa can also be taught in Igala in primary school. As a yoruboid language, Igala is related to Yoruba to a certain extent . Both the Igala language and the related Igala culture and tradition have influenced other cultures and languages in the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers .
