Ignacio de la Carrera y Cuevas (* 1747 in Santiago de Chile , † 1819 ibid) was a Chilean aristocrat and politician. He was a member of the first government junta of Chile in 1810 and father of the Carrera brothers, who are among the outstanding figures of the Chilean war of independence . The family's roots are in the Basque Country .

Life

Ignacio Carrera was born to Ignacio de la Carrera y Ureta (1703-1760), a mine owner, and Javiera de las Cuevas y Pérez de Valenzuela. He inherited a considerable fortune from his parents. He married Francisca de Paula Verdugo Fernández de Valdivieso y Herrera, with whom he had four children: Javiera , José Miguel , Juan José and Luis , all of whom would play an important role in Chile's war of freedom.

Ignacio Carrera began his military career with the royal militia and entered the cavalry regiment in 1777. Regardless of his military career, he continued to take care of the family's ventures and was considered one of the wealthiest men in Chile. His family was one of the first aristocratic circles in the colony and so he was appointed to the first government junta of Chile on September 18, 1810 . With this event his political streak was awakened.

In 1811 he was appointed to the Supreme Court and in 1812 to the provisional government junta. In 1814, when the Spaniards regained power in Chile, he was arrested and exiled to the Juan Fernández Islands . A lengthy process has been put through to him and his family.

Juan Fernández's exiles were not allowed to return to Chile until 1817. Here he learned that his family had torn apart, fled and persecuted in exile in Argentina. His sons Juan José and Luis were executed in Mendoza on April 8, 1818, while Javiera and José Miguel lived in exile, one in Uruguay and the other fighting in Argentina. The Chilean government even charged him with the cost of publicly shooting his sons in Argentina. This event eventually broke his will to live and he died in Santiago less than a year later.
