Malappuram ( Malayalam : മലപ്പുറം Malappuṟam [ ˈmaləpːurʌm ]) is a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala . At the time of the 2011 census, Malappuram had 68,127 residents. The city is the administrative seat of the district of the same name .
Malappuram is located in the hinterland of the Malabar Coast on the bank of the Kadalundi River around 50 kilometers southeast of Kozhikode (Calicut). The road from Kozhikode to Palakkad runs through the city . Malappuram is not connected to the railway network, the nearest train stations are in Angadipuram and Tirur .
The area of Malappuram is strongly influenced by Islam . During the British colonial period, there were several Muslim revolts against colonial rule in the city. Malappuram was one of the centers of the Moplah uprising , which was suppressed in 1921.
