Ignatius Nuh

Ignatius Nuh (Nūḥ, Noah) (* 1451 in Baqūfā , Lebanon ; † July 28, 1509 in Ḥamah) was a Syrian Orthodox bishop and patriarch of Mardin / Antioch .

He comes from a family of Catholic Maronites . During a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, he became a Syrian Orthodox monk and was ordained a priest by Dioskoros ˁIsā ibn Ḍaw Metrop, Metropolitan of Jerusalem based in the Dair Mar Musa al-Habaschi monastery near an-Nabek . On his behalf he worked for a time in the Lebanon Mountains to persuade more Maronites to convert to the Syrian Orthodox Church.

In 1480/1 he was ordained bishop of Emesa ( Homs ) by Patriarch Ignatius Johannes Ibn Šīllah al-Barṭellī (1480–1493) and took the official name Cyrillus (Kyrillos), in 1485 he was elevated to Maphrian in Mardin with the official name Basilius ( Basil) and elected Patriarch of Mardin in 1493/1494 and consecrated with the official name Ignatius. He resided in the monastery of az-Zannār near Homs.

He wrote church history and theological works in Arabic and composed in Syriac. The Tetraevangelion Vat.syr. 271 v, J, 1483 comes from his hand.
