Ignazio Buttitta (born September 19, 1899 in Bagheria , Sicily , † April 5, 1997 ibid) was an Italian poet .

Life

Buttitta was born into a simple family that ran a small sausage shop in Bagheria. After participating in the First World War , he joined the socialists. He worked in his parents' business, but also began to write poetry in his native Sicilian language . In 1923 his first volume of poetry was published. Shortly after the second volume was published in 1928, Buttitta moved to Milan for business reasons .

During the Second World War he had to leave Milan temporarily because of his political views. He joined the Resistance , was arrested and narrowly escaped conviction. After returning to Milan he maintained close contact with other artists from Sicily such as the writers Elio Vittorini and Salvatore Quasimodo or the painter Renato Guttuso . In his house he also met the folk singer Rosa Balistreri , who added his poems to her repertoire. His third work was published in 1954, financed by the Communist Party. The volume Io faccio il poeta , published in 1972, was awarded the Premio Viareggio .

Buttitta was particularly interested in current political issues from his homeland. In the poem A Stragi di Purtedda he deals with Salvatore Giuliano and the attack he carried out on the communists, in Lamentu d'una matri with the murder of a well-known union member by the mafia . He was also very committed to preserving the Sicilian language.
