Rosa Balistreri (born March 21, 1927 in Licata , † September 20, 1990 in Palermo ) was a Sicilian folk singer .

Life

As the daughter of a traveling merchant, she grew up in very poor circumstances and got to know all of Sicily in her childhood. In order to support herself and her children, she partly earned her living with cleaning and auxiliary work. She lived temporarily in Florence .

Her musical career began in 1964 when she was invited to the Festival della Canzone Popolare in Salerno , where she was awarded a prize. Another success was the 1966 participation in Dario Fos Ci ragiono e canto . Overnight, Rosa Balistreri became one of the most important figures in folk music, who was rediscovered and valued in Italy during those years. Despite the successes, she remained attached to her roots and the poorer people. In 1968 she gave a concert for the homeless in Gibellina , which had been completely destroyed by an earthquake.

Rosa Balistreri sang in a strong, sometimes rough voice. Her repertoire ranged from lullabies and folk songs from the various regions of Sicily to poems by Ignazio Buttitta . She interpreted texts about poverty, imprisonment and the mafia .

In 2018, Cantante folk Rosa Balistreri was entered in the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Sicily at the request of her home municipality Licata.
