Igor Garšnek (born July 30, 1958 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian composer.

life and work

Igor Garšnek was born as the son of the Estonian composer and music teacher Anatoli Garšnek (1918–1998). In 1982 he completed his composition studies with Eino Tamberg at the State Conservatory (now the Estonian Music and Drama Academy ) in Tallinn . From 1982 to 1984 he continued his education at the Leningrad Conservatory . Since 1984 he has been teaching at the Estonian Academy of Music.

From 1986 to 1993 Garšnek was sound engineer at Estonian radio and from 1988 to 1990 he was employed by the Estonian state film company Tallinnfilm . Garšnek also played in numerous rock bands (including Synopsis , Ruja and Data ) and appeared as a presenter of music programs on Estonian television . In addition, he published on music topics, especially in the weekly newspaper Sirp .

Igor Garšnek became known to a larger audience through numerous compositions. In addition to rock music, this also includes electronic music and more classical pieces. The best-known include the two symphonies (1982 and 1989), the concert for guitar, rock ensemble and symphony orchestra (1986), the rococo oratorio Loomade farm (1990) and the piece Action: David and Goliath for chamber ensemble (2001).
