Igor Kopystiansky ( Ukrainian Ігор Копистянський Ihor Kopystjanskyj ; born December 16, 1954 in Lviv , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian - American artist .

life and work

In his work, Igor Kopystiansky refers to representational paintings from art history. “He copies them himself, using reproductions as a template. In his “compact exhibitions” he stacks the copied pictures on top of each other or rolls the canvases into balls. Treated as an object, the image disappears and yet remains hidden. "

Igor Kopystiansky moved to New York in 1988. In 1990 he received a scholarship from the DAAD's Berlin artist program , in 2000 he received the Käthe Kollwitz Prize and in 2008 became Residences Internationales aux Recollets in Paris. At times he works with Svetlana Kopystiansky . Among other things, they jointly exhibited The boundary rider at the Biennale of Sydney and Flow at documenta11 .
