Igor Sarmientus

Igor Sarmientos (* 20th century in Guatemala City ) is a Guatemalan conductor, cellist and percussionist.

The son of the composer and conductor Jorge Álvaro Sarmientos began to play drums at the age of five, performed as a drummer with jazz bands and with the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Guatemala , whose first timpanist he was from the age of seventeen to the age of twenty-ninth, and was the first timpanist at a guest concert by Lukas Foss in Guatemala. At the Universidad Rafael Landivar he obtained a bachelor's degree in music and Western philosophy.

At the University of North Texas he studied cello with Adolfo Odnoposoff and Carter Enyeart until 1990 and attended master classes for cello with Antonio Meneses , Jascha Silverstein , Yo-Yo Ma and Gary Hoffman and for baroque cello with Christina Mahler . Besides his father, his teachers as conductor were Anshel Brusilow , Serge Zechnacker , Anthony Maiello and Dennis Layendecker , and he also took part in masterclasses from Guillermo Scarabino , Mario Benzecri , Eduardo Mata , Eri Klas , Jorma Panula , Kenneth Kiesler and Marin Alsop .

In 1993 he won first prize at the First Latin American Orchestral Conducting Competition organized by the São Paulo University Orchestra and was appointed Deputy Director of the orchestra (1994–96). In the following years he was guest conductor of many well-known orchestras in North and South Marica and Europe, and soloists such as Kumi Miyagawa , Robert De Maine , Carlos Prieto , Jose Luis Sola , Judith Borras , Keiko Abe , Antonio Lauro del Claro , Gianfranco Bortolato , Elisa Fukuda , Robert Davidovici , Carter Enyeart , Raquel Ramirez , Zamira Barquero , Luis Orlandini , Pavel Steidel , Luis Gaeta , Luis Giron May , Licia Lucas , Andres Archila , Encarnacion Vasquez , Marco Rapetti , Birgit Beer and Felipe Ramirez performed under his direction.

He has also conducted programs for the National Ballet of Guatemala and opera productions, was musical director of the National Choir of Guatemala and from 2000 to 2006 dean of the National Conservatory. With Maria Ciudad-Real (and support from José Antonio Abreu ) he founded the music initiative El Sistema and the Musica y Juventud Foundation in 1997 . Their main project was the establishment of the Orquesta Sinfonica Jesus Castillo , of which Sarmientos was artistic director and conductor for ten years.
