Carlos Prieto (* 1937 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican cellist.

Prieto had cello lessons from the age of four. His teacher was Imre Hartman , later he studied with Pierre Fournier in Geneva and with Leonard Rose in New York. He also studied engineering and economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

Prieto has performed with many major orchestras in North and South America, Europe and Asia. He played the world premieres of more than fifty works, many of which were dedicated to him by composers such as Joaquín Rodrigo , Manuel Castillo , Tomas Marco and Robert X. Rodriguez . During the celebrations for Johann Sebastian Bach's 300th birthday , he performed with Bach's cello suites in New York, Philadelphia, Paris, Moscow, Beijing, Shanghai, New Delhi, Mexico and Bogota.

In 1992 he received an award from the City of Los Angeles for his contribution to understanding between Mexico and the USA through his music. In 1995 the Austrian ambassador to Mexico awarded him the Mozart Medal. In the same year he became head of the foundation of the Las Rosas Conservatory. In 1999 he was appointed Officier des Arts et Lettres .

The University of Indiana honored him with the Eva Janzer Award and Yale University with the Cultural Leadership Citation . In 2004 he became a member of the University of Texas Fine Arts Advisory Council and in 2006 the King of Spain awarded him the Spanish Civil Merit Order. The Conservatorio de las Rosas and the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes de México organize the Concurso Internacional de Violonchelo Carlos Prieto every three years .

Prieto has recorded more than eighty works on CD, including the cello suites by Bach, works by Shostakovich , Saint-Saëns , Boccherini , Fauré , Tchaikovsky , Kodály , Bruch , Martinů and an eleven-part series with compositions by Latin American and Spanish musicians. He also wrote six books about his experiences as a world traveler and musician.
