Iguanodectes is a genus of small, slender tetra that is widespread in northern South America ( Guiana , Amazon basin ).

features

The Iguanodectes species are slender, elongated fish that reach body lengths between 4.6 and 10.3 centimeters. The dorsal fin is short and begins about the middle of the body, the anal fin is very long. The sideline is complete. The intermaxillary bone (premaxillary) is covered with incisor-like, multi-pointed, flat teeth that stand in two rows. The maxillary is short and has one or two teeth. From Piabucus , the only other species of the subfamily Iguanodectinae differs iguanodectes by the non-keeled belly.
