The Iguanodectidae are a family from the order of the tetra that is native to South America. The family consists of three genera, two of which are combined in a subfamily Iguanodectinae. All were originally placed in the family of the true tetras (Characidae). The close relationship of these groups is based on the comparison of DNA sequences from two genes in mitochondrial DNA and from three genes from the cell nucleus. A morphological diagnosis of the family has not yet been published.
The fish are elongated like minnows . The largest species can be 4 to 13 cm long. All carnivores feed mainly on insects (approach food).
Systematics
There are currently 30 species in three genera belonging to the Iguanodectidae family.
- Subfamily lizard tetra (Iguanodectinae)
- Iguanodectes Cope, 1872
- Piabucus Oken, 1817
- Bryconops clade
The Iguanodectidae are probably the sister group of the Acestrorhynchidae .
