The Acestrorhynchidae are a family from the order of Characins in South America is located. The family was introduced in 1912 by the German-American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann with the spindle tetras ( Acestrorhynchus ) as the only genus, but today consists of three subfamilies with a total of seven genera. One of these subfamilies, the Roestinae , originally belonged to the wolf tetra family (Cynodontidae). The close relationship between these groups is based exclusively on the comparison of DNA sequences from two genes in mitochondrial DNA and three genes from the cell nucleus and has not yet been supported by morphological features.
description
The fish are elongated like a pike (spindle tetra) or have a more or less oval body, often with a more curved belly line (Heterocharacinae). The largest spindle tetra can be 40 cm long, the species of the other two subfamilies remain much smaller. All of them feed on carnivore, the spindle tetra on smaller fish, the rest mainly on insects (approach food).
Systematics
There are currently 27 species in seven genera in the Acestrorhynchidae family.
- Subfamily Spindelalmler (Acestrorhynchinae)
- Subfamily Heterocharacinae
- Subfamily Roestinae
The Acestrorhynchidae are probably the sister group of the Iguanodectidae .
