Roestinae

The Roestinae are a little researched and little known subfamily of the tetras . Species from the subfamily occur in Brazil in the upper and middle Amazon basin , in the Rio Tocantins , in the Colombian Río Magdalena , in the catchment area of Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela and in Essequibo ( Guyana ). The subfamily includes two genus with three species each.

features

Roestinae species have a laterally flattened, moderately high-backed body and are of a silvery color. The species of the genus Gilbertolus are 9.6 to 13 cm long, the Roestes species are slightly larger with 14.2 to 20 cm. The mouth is strongly above, the eyes are large. The fangs of the carnivorous Roestinae species are much smaller than those of the wolf tetra (Cynodontidae). The pectoral fins are long and stand far down, the dorsal fin is short and flag-like, the anal fin is long, the caudal fin is forked.

Systematics

The subfamily Roestinae was first established by Lucena & Menezes in 1998 and first placed in the family of the wolf tetra (Cynodontidae), then in 2011 by Oliveira and colleagues based on the comparison of DNA sequences from two genes of the mitochondrial DNA and of three genes from the nucleus of the Associated with family Acestrorhynchidae .
