Ikkyu ( Japanese あ っ か ん べ ェ 一 休 , Akkambe Ikkyū ) is a manga by the Japanese draftsman Hisashi Sakaguchi from 1993 to 1995. The work deals with the life of the monk Ikkyū Sōjun .

action

Sengikumaru, illegitimate son of Go-Komatsu - tennō , grew up with his mother's family in simple circumstances. One day he is sent to the Sorin Temple and is allowed to return when he becomes a good monk. He now lives in the temple under the name Shuken, has to work hard there and misses his mother. He struggled and made a name for himself as a clever and hardworking monk, but when a wandering monk visited the temple, he decided to go on a wandering too.

publication

The manga was published from December 1993 to 1995 in individual chapters in the Afternoon magazine published by Kodansha . The chapters later appeared in four anthologies, 1200 pages in total. The work was published in French and Spanish by Glénat , and a German version was published by Carlsen Comics from September 2008 to August 2009 . The German translation was done by Josef Shanel and Matthias Wissnet.

reception

Paul Gravett cites Ikkyu as an example of an insightful study of a historical person in Manga - Sixty Years of Japanese Comics . After his death in 1995, Hisashi Sakaguchi received the Ikkyu Association of Japanese Comic Book Artists.
