Illinois State Route 48 is a trunk road off Interstate 55 , at an exit three miles west of Raymond , traveling northeast through Taylorville and Decatur to a point on Illinois State Route 54 (formerly part of US Highway 54 ) between DeWitt and Farmer City leads. In particular, the route from Decatur to Raymond (54 miles) forms an important part of the Illinois transport network, as it is a diagonal route (parallel to the Norfolk-Southern Railway - originally part of the Wabash Railroad ) a shortcut to the route with Interstate 72 and Interstate 55 (65 miles across Springfield, Illinois) , which runs in the cardinal directions only.
