Illuminata is an Austrian symphonic metal band from Graz .

history

Illuminata was founded in 2006 by Lukas Knoebl and Dave Trummer. In the first few years the line-up of the band varied. In 2007 the band released the EP Lachrymal on their own. Two years later the album From the Chalice of Dreams followed . With the album A World So Cold that followed in 2011 , the band was able to record growing international recognition. Magazines and websites such as Legacy and Stormbringer.at rated the album positively. During this phase the band performed as support for Xandria , Visions of Atlantis and Serenity , as well as at the Metalchamp in Slovenia. The album Where Stories Unfold , which followed in 2015 , was financed by a crowdfunding campaign and enabled the collaboration with the 60-member Czech Film Orchestra, two choirs and various chamber musicians.

Style and judgment

The band calls their style cinematic metal . The name is derived from the connection between symphonic film music and heavy metal . This mixture is also referred to in reviews. The music of Illuminata lies “between Nightwish and Pirates of the Caribbean ” (IlonA on metalglory.de). In an overall view, the band is said to be very close to existing genre interpreters, so "Illuminata is something for fans of Epica , Nightwish and ReVamp , who appreciate music from Disney and fantasy films and can also relate to the name Hans Zimmer ." (Petra D. on Time for Metal) In particular, some reviewers consider the arrangements to be of high quality. The music says “great orchestral parts” (Manfred on stormbringer.at). on. The orchestra's production is also highlighted on Powermetal.de as “excellently produced” and “in terms of variation and dynamics, too […] what most bands in this sector deliver.” However, this strength would be “weakness in metallic part of the music ”. The guitars and drums are in the background and the riffing is "rather average" while the band restricts itself to "giving the orchestral arrangements more pressure with electric guitars." In the context of symphonic metal, the band is only used elsewhere little autonomy is given and Illuminata are discussed as a "poorly copied half version [...]" of well-known interpreters of the genre, as well as being referred to as the "deepest and most boring cliché mukke". Furthermore, the band is less well versed in cooperation with the orchestras than other performers of the genre and “[k] omplex symbioses of metal and symphony, as we know from EPICA or HAGGARD , [would] not [.] "(Michael Klaas on Metal.de)
