Ilse Huizinga (born October 15, 1966 in Beverwijk , Netherlands ) is a Dutch jazz singer.

biography

An old piano that her family had given her first attracted her to music when she was 6 years old. Afterwards she fell in love with the sounds of old albums like Ella Fitzgerald , Billie Holiday and Abbey Lincoln . Her fascination increased when she saw and heard Betty Carter sing at the North Sea Jazz Festival . She took her first singing lessons at the age of 17. She later studied with John de Mol senior (father of show master Linda de Mol ) and Gertjan Arentsen in Amsterdam .

She regularly took part in the "public microphone nights" of the Casablanca Jazz Club in the red light district in the heart of Amsterdam. Success came only after spending a year in Australia , after which she completed a degree in public administration at the University of Amsterdam . She later studied with Sylvi Lane at the Amsterdam Conservatory and attended master classes with Dianne Reeves and Margriet Eshuis. She made various concert tours in Spain , Turkey , Switzerland and France and performs regularly in Great Britain . She won the “Schiedam Jazz Prize” and represented the Netherlands at the international Jazz à Vienne festival (France).

From the beginning of her career, the media and audiences had spoken highly of her interpretations of the Great American Songbook . Numerous articles and radio broadcasts followed.

The royal Dutch airline KLM chose Ilse Huizinga's debut album for its entertainment program. The Dutch jazz archive called this album a "reveal". On the album Voices Within she cleverly notices her own voice fivefold, and in the opinion of the critics this results in "something of the best close harmony for decades". Her third album "The Sweetest Sounds" was "chosen album of the week" on Dutch radio and can be heard regularly on Radio Swiss Jazz , Jazz Radio Berlin and other jazz radio stations all over Europe. After an informal debut in London's Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club , she delighted her audience at the world-famous Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. She also performed for the inmates of Bijlmerbajes Prison in Amsterdam.

In 2001 Ilse Huizinga released an album with her husband, the Dutch composer , pianist , producer and arranger Erik van der Luijt . This album The Sweetest Sounds was dedicated exclusively to the songs of Richard Rodgers . It received much critical acclaim and was nominated for Holland's most prestigious music award, the Edison .

Several of her albums with jazz standards are highly acclaimed by the critics: Voices Within shows a polyphonic side to her talent. The Sweetest Sounds is an acclaimed high point from 2001, while The Intimate Sessions was released in 2006 specifically to meet demand in the Japanese market. Easy to Idolize (2003) and Beyond Broadway (2005) confirmed their position as one of the most important European interpretations of the Great American Songbook , accompanied by a stellar line-up of jazz musicians.

She is what is called a "singers' singer" in English , an artist who is widely respected among his colleagues. “Wonderful repertoire, great arrangements, excellent musicians and a singer with a beautiful, strong voice,” says her colleague, the Dutch jazz singer Greetje Kauffeld .

voice

Her voice is described as "warm and delightful", "free and full".

A voice that other singers only dream of; full, clear and sensitive. "

- Nouveau

Your classic training shines through in a real coloratura ,

It can fit entire octaves into a single large syllable - which the poignant lyrics never suffer from. "

- De Volkskrant

In interviews, Huizinga has said that her father's death and traumatic pregnancy affected her singing deeply. “Before that I was completely focused on the technical side of singing. Now I'm no longer such a perfectionist, no longer focused on flawless singing. Feelings and the deeper meaning behind the lyrics have become much more important to me. "

Huizinga has a powerful, pleasant - and above all warm and beautiful - voice that is very versatile. She bends and stretches them with her ability. [...] She approaches her vocal limits fearlessly. Ilse combines courage with innovation, [...] and presents the lyrics with such completeness and conviction that she always captivates the listener's ear. In this self-realization, great singers differ from the endless numbers of so-called great talents. "
