The Imbabura is a complex volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes . It is located in the Imbabura province of the same name, about 10 km from its capital Ibarra and 6 km from Otavalo . The volcano has a north-south average of 16 km and an east-west extension of 14 km. The highest crater of Imbabura at 4609 m has been inactive for thousands of years. It is also known as Taita Imbabura (taita: Kichwa for father ) and is considered sacred in the mythology of the indigenous population, which may have been promoted by the fact that the summit of Imbabura is almost always covered by clouds and only sometimes briefly (usually after Sunrise or just before sunset) can be seen with a free summit. In addition to the main crater, the Imbabura has other craters such as the Azaya or Huarmi Imbabura (huarmi: Kichwa for woman ) in the west ( 3926  m ) and the Artezón ( 4030  m ) in the north.

At the western foot of the Imbabura is Lake San Pablo , whose water flows over the Peguche waterfall.
