Imgur (/ ɪmədʒəɹ /, ie image-he , stylisiert as Imgur ) is a free file hosting - service for images and a comment-driven social community. The site is maintained through income from advertising and merchandise .

history

Imgur was founded in 2009 by Alan Schaaf in Athens , Ohio , USA . In 2010 Imgur presented a gallery with user-uploaded pictures showing the latest contributions. In addition, a comment and rating function was installed. Imgur released its first content creation tool in 2013: the Imgur Meme Generator . Simple macros can be created there and a gallery of meme templates can be viewed.
The self-financed start-up soon had enough funds to invest in other companies of its own, including Andreessen Horowitz and Reddit , from which it was able to generate significant profits in 2014.

In 2011 and 2013, Imgur won the Best Bootstrapping Startup award at the TechCrunch Crunchies Awards . At the Webby Awards 2015, Imgur won the People's Voice Award in the categories Best Social Media and Best Community Website . In the same year, Imgur had more than 150 million active users per month.

Others

The official mascot of the site is the Imguraffe, a combination of the Imgur and Giraffe components. Originally it was just an April Fool's joke, but it was kept because of its good acceptance.
