The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is a Catholic church on Church Street in the capital St. George’s in the Caribbean island state of Grenada in the Lesser Antilles . It serves as the seat of the diocese of Saint George's in Grenada ( Dioecesis Sancti Georgii ).
location
The church is located on the hill in the center of St. George's and offers a good view over the capital. It is also one of the city's landmarks.
architecture
The cathedral was built on the site of a small previous building that had been built in 1804 and was dedicated to St. James the Elder . The neo-Gothic church tower dates from 1818. The three-aisled church is kept relatively simple. The walls are made of brownish-gray lava rock. The interior is cream colored with a light blue roof. The crucifix in front of the exposed stone wall in the choir defines the church. It has a walk-in baptismal font.
history
The cathedral was completed in 1884. It had to be completely renovated after Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
