The company was founded around 1800 in Ruhrort and initially dealt with coal transports between the Ruhr and the Netherlands and southern Germany.

In 1972 the independent company Haniel Reederei GmbH was founded. 1990–1999 various companies involved in pushing , tanker and chartering were acquired. In 2000/2003 the shipping group was taken over by the Imperial Logistics International group in Duisburg, which in turn belongs to the South African service group Imperial Holdings Limited in Edenvale . On June 1, 2003, the company was renamed the Imperial Reederei Group. On March 8, 2012, the name was changed to Imperial Shipping Holding.
