Imre Szekeres (born September 9, 1950 in Szolnok ) is a Hungarian politician of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) and was Minister of Defense of the Republic of Hungary until May 2010 .

Life and education

Szekeres first grew up in Jászapáti, where his parents had moved a few months after his birth. His school days also began there . He continued his education in Kazincbarcika and graduated in 1969 with a qualification in the chemical industry . In Veszprém , Imre Szekeres studied at the "Veszprém University of Chemical Engineering". He completed his studies in 1974 as an engineer .

Szekeres has been married since 1976 and has two children.

Political career

During his studies , Szekeres began to be politically active in the Communist Youth Association at the university . From 1986 to 1990 Imre Szekeres was the deputy chairman of the Veszprém City Council . Szekeres is a founding member of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) and was its executive vice-chairman from 1990 to 1994. Between 1994 and 1998 he was the parliamentary group leader of his party and since 2004 he has been vice-chairman of the MSZP again. From 2002 to 2004, the future Minister of Defense, Imre Szekeres, was State Secretary in the office of the Hungarian Prime Minister. Between June 2006 and May 2010 he was Hungary's Minister of Defense.
