In Oblivion is a funeral doom band founded in 2009 .

history

Justin Buller initiated In Oblivion in 2009 while he was still high school in Austin, Texas . At the beginning only loose ideas and sketches came up that Buller arranged by himself. By around 2014 he developed his compositional and musical-technical skills and formed a stable band structure with the guitarist Ciaran McCloskey, the bassist Andy Gonzales, the drummer Shane Elwell and the keyboardist Ryoko Minowa. As a band, In Oblivion recorded a self-titled EP that was released in 2015 via Endless Winter .

After the EP came out, three years passed during which Andy Gonzales left the group and was replaced by Jake Holmes. In Oblivion released the album Memories Engraved in Stone via Endless Winter in the new line-up . The album received an average to positive reception. Ian Morrissey of the webzine Doom-Metal.com wrote that he “doubts that anyone would fall in love with it,” but that he would also “be surprised if someone despised it.” The reviewer Vlakorados said otherwise for the Italian webzine Aristokrazia, that Memories Engraved in Stone was "a great example of Funeral Doom" and that the album would "please any fan of the genre". Two years after the album was released, the EP Oblivion was released , which the band released as a download in cooperation with Black Lion Records . The band, changed again, advertised with the download the new album planned in cooperation with the new label, which should be released in the same year. Minowa and Elwell had since left In Oblivion. Adrian Voorhies joined the band as a drummer. Buller took over the position of the resigned keyboardist himself.

style

The music played by In Oblivion is assigned to the Funeral Doom . The band is seen as one of the melodic and atmospheric interpreters of the genre. The compositions of the group are considered to be extremely long and aim to create “a dark romantic feeling” through the use of synthesizers. This should stand out from the funeral-typical "grim and difficult phases" that are also part of the music. For a classifying comparison, reference is made to " Aphonic Threnody and similar bands".

The singing is considered to be dominant and placed in the foreground of the music. It varies between different forms of growling and is accompanied by screaming vocals that are close to Black Metal and mixed into the background . Both the guitar and the synthesizer play are perceived as "punchy and powerful". Both instruments are arranged in a dialogical alternation with one another. The rhythm of the music is sluggish Genre Typically, however, has a, occasionally up in the pace of Death Metal advancing, dynamics .
