Aphonic Threnody is a funeral doom band founded in London in 2012 .

history

Due to the large number of musicians involved in the multinational band project around guitarist Riccardo Veronese , Aphonic Threnody is often seen as a supergroup of the genre. From the first line-up, there was no other member besides Veroneseder who called the project a collective. Over the duration of the activity, various well-known musicians contributed to the publications and appearances of Aphonic Threnody as guests or as band members. The music presented by Veronese and his various fellow musicians was largely praised internationally by the press of the metal scene , especially in the form of webzines .

occupation

Aphonic Threnody is a multinational band project founded in London in 2012, which presents itself as an Extreme Doom collective. The band was initiated by guitarist and bassist Veronese from Gallow God and singer Roberto Mura from URNA . For the debut EP First Funeral , Kostas Panagiotou from Pantheist and Wijlen Wij as keyboard player, Ábel Libisch from Leecher as cellist and Marco Z from URNA as drummer joined the band. In 2014, Zack Cignetti from Tomorrowwillbeworse joined the band as guitarist and Juan Escobar from Mar de Grises , AstorVoltaires and Arrant Saudade as multi-instrumentalist, in return Panagiotou left the collective. In 2019 Justin Buller from In Oblivion and “Val Atra Niteris” from Frowning joined the band to work on the album The Great Hatred , while Mura, Libisch, Cignetti and Marco Z had left the project in previous years. At times the group was supported by Ilia Rodriguez from Binah and Jeff Simon from Indian Summer .

Guests

For the first album When Death Comes , which was recorded in the summer of 2013 and released in 2014, the band acted as guests with Greg Chandler from Esoteric , Josh Moran from Vacant Eyes and David 'Unsaved' from Ennui . The band continued to work with well-known musicians of the funeral doom as guests in the following years. Then brought Jarno Salomaa of Shape of Despair for the split EP Of Graves, of Worms, and Epitaphs as a guitarist one. Dominik Morgenroth from Worship , Justin Hartwig from Mournful Congregation , Frederic-Patte Brausser from Funeralium , Sophie Day from Alunah , Josh Moran from Vacant Eyes and Sami Rautio from My Shameful contributed to the recordings of the 2017 album Of Loss and Grief .

Publication and reception

Aphonic Threnody made his debut in 2013 with the internationally acclaimed EP First Funeral , which was released via avant-garde music . In 2014, GS Productions released the split EPs Immortal in Death with Ennui and Of Graves, of Worms, and Epitaphs with Frowning , and Of Poison and Grief with The Blessed Hellbrigade , Y'ha-Nthlei and In Lacrimaes et Dolor . The split publications were hardly noticed, but rated extremely positively in the few existing reviews. In contrast, the first studio album When Death Comes , which was released in the same year and was released via Doomentia Records , was widely discussed internationally and mostly received positively. In rather mediocre reviews, reviewers criticized the perceived monotony of the music. The second studio album Of Loss and Grief was released in 2017 via Terror From Hell Records and was also well received internationally. In mid-2019, the band announced they were working on their third studio album. This should appear on the Indian label Transcending Obscurity Records .

style

The music of Aphonic Threnody is assigned to the Funeral Doom. For the Doom-Metal.com website, the game form presented by the group is described as “epic” and “complex” as well as a “scary” variant of the genre. As a comparison, reference is made to a mixture of an "unexpected and devastating" part of the esoteric reminiscent and the soundscapes of Until Death Overtakes Me . Other reviewers similarly point to a dynamic between “ semi-loud melodies and mountains of riffs ”. The guitar playing is varied between the named riffs, acoustic passages and melodic leads . Cello and piano complement the sound with instruments that go beyond the "classic metal instrumentation". The vocals are mainly presented as a hoarse growling , but also presented in contrasting form as clear vocals.
