Anton Chekhov

In the barber shop ( Russian В цирульне , W zirulne ) is a short story by the Russian writer Anton Chekhov , which appeared on February 7, 1883 in Sritel , a Moscow magazine for humor. During the author's lifetime the text was translated into Hungarian, German, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, Finnish, Czech and Swedish.

Moscow at seven in the morning: Makar Kuzmich Bljostkin has already opened his narrow, unsightly barber's room. The 23-year-old, unwashed, dirty Stutzer already had a customer early in the morning - his godfather Erast Iwanytsch Jagodow. The godfather, a locksmith, made the long way from the Red Pond to the barber shop at Kaluga Gate, because he wanted to have his long hair cut down for free . Makar goes to work to make the scissors squeak. Over work, he asks the first “customer” about the welfare of his wife and, above all, of his daughter Anna Erastowna. Anna was engaged to a certain Shejkin - a good match. The wedding is scheduled for a week. Makar is cordially invited. Makar drops the scissors and cries. He had proposed to Anna and always cut the godfather's hair free of charge. Now everything is over. Makar can no longer work that day. The godfather has to walk the long way home to the Red Pond with one half of his head shaved - like a convict.
