Inaam al-Mufti

Inaam Qaddoura al-Mufti, also Al Mufti, Al-Mufti or Almufti ( Arabic إنعام قدورة المفتي, DMG Inʿām Qaddūra al-Muftī ; born February 26, 1929 in Safad ; died November 6, 2018 in Amman ) was the first woman to be appointed to the Jordanian cabinet in 1979 and to hold a high-ranking Jordanian government position as minister until 1984.

Life and work

Inaam al-Mufti was born in Safad, a city in Galilee ( Palestine ), in 1929 . After completing school, she studied pedagogy and psychology at the American University of Cairo (AUC) and graduated with a bachelor's degree in pedagogy . She also had a British diploma in early childhood education. She worked as a teacher, among others at the Teachers' Training Institute in Ramallah and Amman, and for Radio Jordan.

In 1979, al-Mufti was the first woman ever to be appointed to the Jordanian cabinet and appointed Minister for Social Development. She held this position until 1984. During her tenure, she worked to strengthen women's rights in Jordan . As the first woman in the history of Jordan to head a ministry, she opened the door to political action for Jordanian women.

For the Jordanian Queen Nour al-Hussein , al-Mufti worked as a consultant for development and international relations. She was director of the Women's Training Institute at the United Nations Reliefs and Works Agency (UNRWA), the United Nations agency for Palestine refugees in the Middle East , and director of women's affairs in the Jordanian Ministry of Labor. While working at the Ministry of Labor, al-Mufti developed a plan to integrate women into the economic and social development areas of Jordan. She initiated the Jordanian Women's Union and an association for Jordanian business women.

The founding of the National Association for the Upbringing and Education of Children was also her initiative.

She also made an active contribution to various legislative processes, in particular for the development of women and families in Jordanian society.

In 2003 al-Mufti was appointed to the Jordanian Senate, the upper house of the National Assembly . She was a member of the Committee on Education and Culture and the Committee on Environment, Health and Social Development.

Inaam al-Mufti was married. She died in Amman on November 6, 2018.

For her many years of service she was awarded the Order of the Jordanian Star ( Wisam al-Kawkab al-Urdani ). Carl XVI. Gustaf , King of Sweden , honored her with the medal for international relations .
