Inclusion rider

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Inclusion Rider a contractual clause in the US entertainment industry is called, which requires that the cast of a movie is as diverse as possible. Actors can thereby obtain a contractual guarantee that women and minorities are adequately represented in their films.

idea

The idea for the Inclusion Rider came from Stacy Smith , founder and chairman of the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and professor of media and gender studies at the University of Southern California . The think tank had researched equality and diversity in the entertainment industry and in 2016 determined that the cast in most US-produced films did not match the American population. According to this, there are around 40 to 45 speaking roles in a typical feature film, only eight to ten of these characters are relevant to the story. That is why Smith called for an equality clause in a lecture at the Ted Conference that same year. The proposed inclusion rider, literally an inclusion clause , should take into account the fact that there is no reason why the other 30 do not correspond to the population of the country in which the film is set: “An equality clause of an A-lister in his contract can do this make the other roles reflect the world we actually live in, ”said Smith.

functionality

With the inclusion addition, anyone who is negotiating a film can ask or demand that there is 50 percent diversity, not only in the cast, but also in the crew. If a filmmaker has the addition built into his contract and this is not fulfilled, he can legally withdraw from the contract. For well-known actors, the inclusion rider is a great way to exert their influence for equality in Hollywood , as film studios can lose a strong name if they fail to comply. The Inclusion Rider is an appeal to the first ranks of Hollywood. Actors can therefore obtain contractual guarantees that women and minorities are adequately represented in their films and that the cast of a film is as diverse as possible. Carolin Gasteiger from the Süddeutsche Zeitung compares the clause with the Rooney Rule of the National Football League, according to which the teams should specifically invite members of minorities as potential players.

public perception

At the beginning of March 2018, Frances McDormand asked all women nominated together with her to support the project and in her final words at the Academy Awards , where she was named best actress for her role in the film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri pointed out to the inclusion rider. At that time, many citizens were not aware of this contractual clause. A short time later, Michael B. Jordan also announced that his production company Outlier Society would use an inclusion rider in all future film projects and thus make diversity on the film set mandatory. In mid-March 2018, production partners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck also announced that they would also use the Inclusion Rider in future contracts with their joint production company Pearl Street.
