The India Gate (officially All India War Memorial ) is a single-arched triumphal arch in the Indian capital New Delhi .

The 42 m high arch was designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1921 based on the model of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris . The monument commemorates the soldiers from British India who lost their lives for the British Empire in the First World War . Engraved are the names of 90,000 Indian and British war dead during the First World War, as well as the names of 3,000 soldiers who died on the north-western border and in the war in Afghanistan in 1919 . The deaths in the Bangladesh war in 1971 are also honored by the monument under the India Gate.
