The Indian Airlines Flight 117 was a domestic airliner of Indian Airlines from Mumbai to Hyderabad . On January 12, 1978, a fatal incident occurred on this flight. When the 105-person Boeing 737-2A8 Adv. (VT-EFL) touched down on the runway at Hyderabad-Begumpet Airport , the pilots noticed someone on the runway. In the inevitable collision, the man was killed.

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2A8 Advanced, which was 2 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton, Washington , and made its maiden flight on November 17, 1977, before being delivered to Indian Airlines in the same month. The aircraft had the factory number 21497, it was the 504th Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was approved with the aircraft registration VT-EFL and was given the name Saranga . The twin- engined , narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-17A engines.
Passengers
For the flight to Hyderabad, 95 adult passengers and four children were seated on board the plane in Bagdogra. These were accompanied by six crew members. The 50-year-old captain of the machine had 21,465 hours of flight experience at the time of the accident.

The flight from Bombay to Hyderabad went without a particular incident. The pilots had received clearance to land on runway 09 at Hyderabad Airport. They routinely performed this at 6:57 p.m. local time. The moment the plane touched down, the captain saw a man running across the runway center line with his back to the machine. The captain could no longer avoid the collision. The machine hit the passerby with full force, the man died in the collision.
root cause
Entry into the security area of the airport by an unauthorized person was found to be the cause of the accident.
The whereabouts of the machine
The machine remained undamaged in the incident. It was operated by Indian Airlines. On August 16, 1991, there was another aircraft accident on Indian Airlines Flight 257 , in which it was destroyed and all 69 occupants were killed.
