The Indonesian pigeon ( Macropygia emiliana ) is a species of pigeon birds. It occurs exclusively in Southeast Asia. The population of the species was classified in the IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species in 2016 as “ Least Concern (LC) ” = “not endangered”.

Appearance

The Indonesian pigeon reaches a body length of 35 centimeters. It corresponds to a city pigeon in its size. Like all cuckoo pigeons, it is extremely long-tailed and has a slim build. In her appearance she resembles the dark cuckoo dove .

The head and neck are deep reddish brown. The chest is red-brown. In the male, the upper breast shimmers pink. The underbust merges into a golden brown towards the abdomen and under tail covers. The throat is also golden brown. The back neck has a green sheen. The back, the wing-coverts and the rump are dark red-brown, the feathers of the wing-coverts have rust-red edges. Unlike other cuckoo pigeons, there are no black bars on the tail. This is reddish in color.

distribution and habitat

The Indonesian pigeon has a very large distribution area. It occurs on Borneo , Sumatra , Simeulue , Nias , Netawai, Enggano, Krakatau , the Lampung Bay Islands, Bali , Kangean, Lombok , Sumbawa , Sangeang, Komodo and Flores . Their height distribution usually ranges from 400 to 1,600 meters. In rare exceptional cases it also occurs at altitudes of 2,500 meters above sea level. It is a relatively common species on some of these islands.

The Indonesian pigeon prefers mountain forests that are still untouched. Although it is often seen in forest clearings, it almost never comes to adjacent cultivated land.

behavior

The Indonesian pigeon is a tree-dwelling species that mainly lives on fruits. She only occasionally comes to the ground to eat or drink. The breeding season is not tied to any season. The clutch consists of a single egg. As is usual with many pigeon species, the nest is only loosely assembled from twigs. It is occasionally erected very low above the ground.

Subspecies

So far, two subspecies are known.

Etymology and history of research

Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte described the Indonesian pigeon under the current name Macropygia emiliana . The type specimen came from Java. William John Swainson had the generic name Macropygia a . a. for the chestnut pigeon ( Macropygia phasianella ( Temminck , 1821)). The name is derived from the Greek words "makros, μακρος " for "long, large" and "-pygios, pygē, -πυγιος, πυγη " for "-steißig, rump, rump". The species name is dedicated to Charles Émile Fauqueux-Parzudaki (1829–1899). Medala is derived from »megas, megalē, μεγας, μεγαλη « for »large, long, powerful«.
