Hendrik Cornelis Siebers (born January 6, 1890 in Surabaya , † October 8, 1949 in Bussum ) was a Dutch ornithologist .

Live and act

Siebers had been interested in birds since he was a student, especially in their systematics, and he especially admired the ornithologist Otto Kleinschmidt . He learned the preparation of birds from Paul Louis Steenhuizen (1891-1937) in Amsterdam (a well-known taxidermist and bird photographer who worked for the Amsterdam Zoo , among others ) and made his doctoral exam (corresponding to the diploma) with a thesis in 1920 in ornithology.

As a field orithologist, he published, for example, on the bird world of Anholt and the marsh tits and willow tits .

In 1920 he became an ornithologist at the Zoological Museum of Bogor on Java and specialized in the local bird life, but also collected and observed on Sumatra , Borneo (middle, east), on the island of Buru and the Kei Islands . He liked to watch on the islands of Edam and Hoorn in the bay of Batavia . On Buru in particular, he first described two new species of birds from the flycatcher family (Muscicapidae), the sumbascatcher ( Muscicapa segregata ) and the Hartertgrund flycatcher ( Ficedula harterti ). In 1930 he described the Buru-Lori ( Charmosyna toxopei ) on the basis of seven specimens caught by Lambertus Johannes Toxopeus in 1921 and 1922.

In 1927 he left the museum and became a middle school teacher in Java. He survived the Japanese occupation relatively well, but lost his library. In October 1947 he went back to the Netherlands and retired and died two years later.
