Indosuchus ("Indian crocodile") is a little known genus of theropod dinosaur from the Upper Cretaceous ( Maastrichtian ) India . It was in 1933 by Friedrich von Huene and Charles Matley basis of two fragmentary cranium described that from the Lameta formation of Bara Simla originate a hill in Madhya Pradesh . These researchers attributed a third brain skull from the same site to a second new genus: Indosaurus . Indosuchus can bedistinguished from Indosaurus on the basis of the comparatively thin skullcap. Today all three skulls are lost.

Novas and colleagues noted in 2004 that all three skulls were in poor condition, so Indosaurus and Indosuchus may be synonyms (belonging to the same genus).

To date, two other finds have been assigned to the genus Indosuchus - these assignments are, however, doubted in the professional world. Chatterjee (1978) described a find of further skull remains from Bara Simla, which was discovered by Barnum Brown in 1922 . Among these remains is an upper jaw that was built as gracefully as the skullcap of Indosuchus , which is why Chatterjee ascribed the entire find to Indosuchus . However, Carrano and Sampson (2008) argue that there is no reason to assume that all of the remains of this find actually belonged to the same animal. Furthermore, Chatterjee and Rudra (1996) attributed a relatively complete skeleton to Indosuchus , which was discovered at Rahioli in Gujarat . However, Carrano and Sampson (2008) recognized that the elements of this skeleton belonged to different animals ( chimera ) and at least two theropods and one sauropod can be attributed.

Systematics

The only species in the genus is Indosuchus raptorius . Like Indosaurus, Indosuchus is a member of the Abelisauridae , a group of Ceratosauria . Von Huene and Matley (1933) originally assigned this genus to the Allosauridae ; later authors classified it as a representative of the Tyrannosauridae .
