Ingo Kowarik

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ingo Kowarik (* 1955 ) is Professor of Ecosystem Science / Plant Ecology at the TU Berlin . His work focuses on urban ecology , nature conservation and biological invasions ( neobiota ), on which he has published numerous studies and articles.

Life

Kowarik began his academic career with a diploma in landscape planning at the TU Berlin, where he then worked from 1982 to 1992 as a research assistant at Herbert Sukopp at the Institute for Ecology. Kowarik received his doctorate in 1988 with a thesis "On the human influence on flora and vegetation" and completed his habilitation in 1992 at the TU Berlin. From 1992 to 1999, Kowarik held a professorship for Applied Plant Ecology / Species and Biotope Protection at the University of Hanover and has headed the Department of Ecosystem Science / Plant Ecology at the Institute of Ecology at the TU Berlin since 1999.

research

His research interests focus on the understanding and design of interactions between human influences (especially urban land use, neobiota ) and biological diversity ( biodiversity ). For this he has u. a. presented, often in collaboration with other female scientists

  • Conceptual work , including a. to concepts of naturalness and hemerobia , potential natural vegetation , wilderness , novel urban ecosystems and to the four natures in the city, consisting of 1. Remnants of the original natural landscape; 2. Stocks of agricultural cultural landscape; 3. horticultural nature and 4. specifically urban-industrial nature.
  • Scientific work , etc. a. on "time lags" in biological invasions, the effects of non-native species ( neobiota ), urban biodiversity patterns and dispersal processes in urban habitats
  • Applied work , u. a. on nature protection and monument preservation, development of urban-industrial fallow land, assessment procedures ( GMOs , invasive species ), nature protection in the city, ecosystem services in the city

In many papers, Kowarik advocates an understanding of nature conservation that preserves biological diversity with openness to new developments, etc. a. in adaptation to changing environmental conditions. This concerns z. B. novel communities of urban habitats or the differentiated handling of non-native species (Neobiota), for which Kowarik advertises in his textbook "Biologische Invasionen. Neophyten und Neozoen in Mitteleuropa" (2003, 2nd edition 2010).

further activities

In an honorary capacity , Kowarik has been the State Commissioner for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management of the State of Berlin since 2001 and, in this role, also chairman of the Advisory Board for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management.

Kowarik is co-founder, longtime coordinator (1999–2011), first president (2012–2014) and honorary president (since 2014) of Neobiota , the scientific network on biological invasions in Europe. He is co-founder of the "Neobiota" series and since 2011 co-editor of the resulting scientific journal NeoBiota.
