Life

Svensson's pyramid owl

Svensson spent his childhood on a farm in southern Sweden, where he came into contact with nature at an early age and began collecting plants and butterflies. Since he did not live close to a place of study, he first began a distance learning course, did a forestry internship and graduated in 1946 as a forest engineer in Stockholm with excellent grades. He also completed a hunting master's degree, which he graduated as a civilian hunter in 1947. Svensson worked as a forest officer in various regions of Sweden and was still very active entomologically . His main interest was the earlier than small butterflies designated (Microlepidoptera) species . During his more than 70-year career as a butterfly collector, he described new species with type locations in Sweden and cataloged around 2000 new provincial finds. Svensson also undertook numerous expeditions to Finland , Norway , Austria and Central Asia as well as to Australia , New Guinea and Japan . He realized that in addition to the pyramid owl ( Amphipyra pyramidea ) there was another, very similar species, which was previously only classified as a subspecies and which was now referred to as Amphipyra berbera . In honor of Svensson, the species received the trivial name Svensson's pyramid owl . Svensson's oak leaf miner ( Stigmella svenssoni ), which belongs to the group of dwarf leaf miners (Nepticulidae ), was dedicated to him.

Most of his extensive butterfly collection is in the Biological Museum of Lund University and the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .
