Inishturk ( Irish : Inis Toirc ; German: "Wild Boar Island") is an inhabited island in Clew Bay off the coast of County Mayo in Ireland . At 191 m, the Mountain Common is the highest point on the island. The neighboring islands are Caher Island , Clare Island and Inishbofin . There are two settlements with a total of 53 residents on the 6 km² island, Ballyheer and Garranty, both of which are located on the eastern side of the island facing away from the sea. Abandoned settlements are Bellavaun and Craggy. Some residents are from the evacuated Inishark Island . The island has been connected to the electricity grid since 2003.
A regular ferry connects Inishturk Harbor with Roonagh Pier on the mainland. On the west coast there is a Martello tower built during the Napoleonic Wars .
Trivia
The youth book "Toxic Gold / or Grandfather's Donkey" published by Wolfram Hänel in 1997 is set on the island of Inishturk.
