The Hungarian Ministry of the Interior ( Hungarian Belügyminisztérium , abbreviated BM) is one of the ministries of the state administrative structure, a budgetary body with national authority. Its head is the Hungarian Minister of the Interior, since 2010 Sándor Pintér .

tasks

In order to ensure the functioning of the country, the Office carries out preparatory and regulatory legislative tasks, and in some cases also administrative and appeal activities in the following areas:

  • Police and law enforcement measures in connection with public safety and the protection of internal order, including ensuring the security of the national border,
  • the surveillance of civil secret services,
  • Police administration, law enforcement, housing and settlement management,
  • Fire protection, disaster control,
  • Citizenship and asylum,
  • some national registers of persons, monitoring of the protection of classified information.

Another great area is self-government support, mainly:

  • Coordinating government tasks related to local governments such as legal, development and coordination tasks, public finance issues, etc.
  • Coordination of state grants for local self-government

The formerly independent organization for border protection was merged with the police on January 1, 2008.

history

According to the April Laws, the ministry was founded on April 11th, 1848, first held by Bertalan Szemere . 2006 divided into:

  • Ministry of Justice and Law Enforcement, which merged with the former Ministry of Justice
  • Ministry of Self-Government and Regional Development, from 2008 Ministry of Self-Government, in 2010 its tasks were assigned to four other ministries

The Orbán II cabinet re-established the office in 2010.
