Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group (abbreviated to Yili Group ) is a Chinese company with headquarters in Hohhot . It is listed in the SSE 50 share index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange .
Yili Group manufactures and sells milk and milk-based products such as powdered milk , yogurts , cold drinks , ice creams , baby food , diet drinks and cheese products .
In September 2008 it became known that the Yili Group used raw milk in its products , which was contaminated with the chemical melamine . The melamine was added to the milk to simulate a higher protein content . As a result, kidney disease was found in at least 53,000 children and it is assumed that at least four small children died of kidney dysfunction .
