Inocencio Francisco da Silva

Inocêncio Francisco da Silva (old spelling Innocêncio), (* 1810 in Lisbon , Portugal ; † June 27, 1876 ibid) was a Portuguese literary scholar , writer and encyclopaedist . With his literary lexicon, he created one of the most extensive works in this field in the literary history of Portugal.

Live and act

Inocêncio Francisco da Silva came from the poorest of backgrounds, but he succeeded and he studied commercial science and business administration and mathematics . He came to the literary studies rather by chance and taught himself everything by himself. In the Miguelistenkrieg he took part on the side of António José de Sousa Manoel de Menezes Severim de Noronha , the Duque de Terceira . Da Silva was an advocate of liberal ideas all his life.

From 1858 he was the main author of the extensive and legendary " Dicionario Bibliografico Portuguesa ", which was the most comprehensive encyclopedia on Portuguese literary history and biographies from the beginning of the 9th century to the life of da Silva. In the many years of work he did not succeed in completing the lexicon, so the work, which had grown to 23 volumes, could only be regarded as completed after his death at the end of the 19th century. Although there had been many literary encyclopedias before and of course after da Silva, this one was unique in its form: it was the most comprehensive and understandable that had ever existed. The author also tried to update the lexicon and keep it up to date through contact with living authors. Other works by the author were not so significant and were forgotten.

He was in regular correspondence with Teófilo Braga , a man who later officially founded literary studies in Portugal as an academic discipline, was himself a very well-known writer and later became the first President of the Portuguese Republic. There must also have been a connection to Camilo Castelo Branco , as he signed one of his works with a personal dedication to the then famous literary scholar.

Under a pseudonym he was also the editor of the poems by Antonio Lobo de Carvalho, " Poesia Joviaese e satyricas " in 1852 . Since the author did not have any resounding success, he was able to publish under his real name, while da Silva needed a pseudonym as the editor in order not to recognize him as a prominent literary scholar at the time.

He regularly wrote articles for the literary magazine " Archivo Pittoresco ", including an obituary for the poet Francisco Joaquim Bigne.

In Lisbon, a street is named after Inocêncio Francisco da Silva. He was also a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. He died on June 27, 1876 in the house where he was born. The following sentence is noted on the tombstone: " Goodbye! Perfect martyrdom ". In his will he had stipulated that his successor for the Dicionario, in order to continue it, would be Brito Aranha .
