Insa Thiele-Eich (born April 21, 1983 in Heidelberg ) is a German meteorologist and astronaut candidate .

Thiele-Eich passed her Abitur at St. Ursula Gymnasium Brühl and studied meteorology at the University of Bonn . She is the scientific coordinator of the Collaborative Research Center TR 32, "Patterns in Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Systems: Monitoring, Modeling and Data Assimilation". TR 32 is about basic research for improved weather and climate forecasting. The focus of Thiele-Eich's work is the investigation of exchange processes, for example water and energy exchange between soil, vegetation and atmosphere. At the same time, she is studying the effects of climate change on Bangladesh in her doctoral thesis .

Possible use as an astronaut

Together with the Bundeswehr pilot Nicola Baumann , Thiele-Eich was selected from more than 400 applicants as one of two finalists in the privately financed initiative Die Astronautin , which wants to turn a German into an astronaut for the first time. Nicola Baumann withdrew from the project at the end of 2017. Suzanna Randall from Cologne has moved up . One of the two women is to be the first German female astronaut to fly into space in 2021. The aim is a short stay of around ten days on the ISS . The flight, which costs around 50 million euros, is to be financed by donations; by April 2018, € 68,590 had been received. In August 2017, Thiele-Eich began a space flight training with a license, diving training and parabolic flights in the Yuri Gagarin cosmonaut training center in Svyosdny Gorodok near Moscow , which was financed by crowdfunding .

She is married and has three children. Her father is the German ESA astronaut Gerhard Thiele .
