The island railway Baltrum was a non-public island or field railway for the transport of luggage in the field railway gauge of 600 mm on the East Frisian island of Baltrum in Germany . The Baltrum island railway was single-track, not electrified and existed from 1949 to 1985. In addition to the building yard of the Water and Shipping Authority (WSA), which had its own track connection with its own locomotive from 1949, there was initially only a single field railroad track for luggage and Freight transport between the pier and the goods shed around 400 meters away including a siding to a local freight forwarder at the pier.

history

In 1960 the island railway was completely rebuilt. Henceforth, a concerned Schöma - Diesel the freight and Loren transport between the investor and the goods shed, where the cargo was transshipped for the transfer to the mainland.

The shipping company Baltrum-Linie built a new pier and a new goods shed next to the renewed railway. Initially, three tracks were laid on the pier. In 1970 the pier was rebuilt and two more tracks were added. Apart from a small siding to a freight forwarder just behind the pier, the small island railway could travel in two directions: In a generous curve it went east and “uphill” for freight trips to the flood-proof goods shed. This route was around 400 meters long. A branching track led from a branch on the way in a westerly direction first to the dike and then in a curve to the building yard of the water and shipping office. This line was 600 meters long and belonged to the WSA, which only needed the track system sporadically.

In the autumn of 1985, the railway operations on Baltrum were stopped. The tracks were largely dismantled. The goods shed was converted into a "National Park House" with the "Island Chamber".

vehicles

From 1960 to 1965, the Inselbahn had the first Schöma diesel locomotive (built in 1960) as locomotives. In 1965 it was sold to a peat factory . She has been with Laubner Garten- & Landschaftsbau in Gütersloh since 2003 . It was replaced by a similar diesel locomotive, also from Schöma (built in 1965) with an output of 26 hp. This is now in use at the humus works in Gnarrenburg . Various freight cars were also available for transporting luggage.

The WSA had its own diesel locomotive built in 1949 (also by Schöma), which was only rarely used and was taken out of service in the 1970s. Her whereabouts are unknown.
