The Madeira archipelago is an archipelago in the Atlantic , located about 600 km off the Northwest coast of Africa and 1000 km southwest of Lisbon .

Politically, the islands in the group belong to Portugal . The capital of Madeira is Funchal with around 100,000 inhabitants.

In addition to the main island Madeira with 736 km², only the much smaller island of Porto Santo (42 km²) is inhabited. The three small, uninhabited islands of Ilhéu Chão , Deserta Grande and Bugio form the archipelago of the Ilhas Desertas ("The deserted islands") with a total area of ​​14.21 km².

Together with the Ilhas Selvagens , some 280 km south, the Madeira archipelago forms the Autonomous Region of Madeira .
