Overall system

The Institut Garnier (address Institut Garnier 1-16 ) in Friedrichsdorf is a group of the school buildings of the former Institut Garnier and is a listed building .

The school

In 1836, Louis Frédéric Garnier founded the private school "Maison d'Education à Friedrichsdorf, près Homburg-ès-Monts", which later became the Philipp Reis School . For the school history see Philipp-Reis-Schule (Friedrichsdorf) # Foundation of the school, Institut Garnier (1836–1923) .

The buildings

The core of the school grounds were the buildings at Hugenottenstrasse 113 (= Institut Garnier 13) and Hugenottenstrasse 117 (= Institut Garnier 1), dating from the mid-18th century. Institut Garnier 1 contained the director's apartment and is a two-story plastered half-timbered house with a gabled mansard roof. Institut Garnier 13 is a former washing and ironing house. The two-story half-timbered house with a half-hipped roof is plastered and has a regular four-part facade.

These two buildings form the entrance to a three-sided courtyard with other buildings. Number 12 is a classroom building built in 1847 according to plans by Franz Sauer, Kirdorf. The middle building (No. 15) contained the kitchen, the dining room and the bedrooms of the boarding school. In the courtyard, the barn (No. 4 and 5) is particularly noticeable. The Remise (No. 14 and 16) already shows signs of Art Nouveau stylistically .

From 1945 the site was used as a farm and from 1972 as a municipal building yard. From 1977 to 1982 it was converted into a mixed use of apartments, shops, the city library and a culture cellar.

At the back of the house at Institut Garnier 1, another building was added (Hugenottenstrasse 119), which after the dissolution of the institute served the neighboring company Rühl Chemie . A music school was later housed there, and from 2004 to 2015 it served as the main building of the Rhein-Main International Montessori School .

The Garnier Schenk memorial

Garnier Schenk memorial

The Garnier Schenk memorial in the inner courtyard on the wall of building no.11 commemorates the school's founder and his successor, his son-in-law Karl Wilhelm Schenk. The memorial designed by Carl Rumpf and Paul Wallot was erected in the school garden. It consisted of a richly decorated wall more than a man's height with a large dedication plaque. In front of it two busts of those to be honored were placed. The memorial, financed by donations from (former) students, was inaugurated on June 13, 1897. It had cost 4,444.57 marks (in today's purchasing power € 31,699).

After the school was converted into a middle school, the monument fell into disrepair. Only the two busts remained. Today they stand to the right and left of the former kitchen well of the kitchen building.
