Louis Frédéric Garnier (* July 18, 1809 , † January 14, 1882 ) was a German teacher and founder of the Friedrichsdorf teaching and educational institution Garnier .

His father was the wool manufacturer Jean Jérémie Garnier. When he was unable to take up his father's job because of asthma, an uncle advised him to take in children and teach them in French. As a result, he attended the teacher training college in Friedberg and studied in Darmstadt and Paris. After his marriage he founded the teaching and education institute in Friedrichsdorf in 1836, first in Neugasse (today Bahnstrasse 6), and after it became too narrow there in Hauptstrasse (today Hugenottenstrasse 107); Today the cultural monument Institut Garnier is located there . He had around a hundred students, including from far away countries. He taught English, French, mathematics and accounting, according to the needs of business families. The school fee of 500 guilders per semester corresponded to the annual salary of a primary school teacher. His students included Matheus Müller (MM-Sekt) and from 1844 to 1848 Philipp Reis , who became a teacher here in 1858.

In 1861 he handed the management over to his son-in-law Karl Wilhelm Schenk. He later sold the institute to Schenk on the condition that his son Léon Garnier should receive it if necessary. After Schenk's death in 1880, Léon was not given a license to run a school due to a lack of educational training and had to sell the institute. After the First World War, it became the Philipp Reis School .
