The Institute for Cardiomyopathies Heidelberg (ICH.), Founded in 2015, is part of the Clinic for Cardiology, Angiology, Pneumology of the Heart Center Heidelberg .

Under the direction of Benjamin Meder, doctors, study experts and natural scientists work together to care for patients with heart muscle diseases ( cardiomyopathy ). The aim is personalized medicine, in which the patient is to be treated and treated, taking into account his or her individual circumstances and taking genetic factors into account. Particular importance is attached to the training and further education of all participating specialist groups and exchanges with those involved.

Besides the derivation of the shortcut by the initials ( I nstitut for C ardiomyopathien H Eidelberg), the name symbolically for "I - the patient", which is at the center.

organization

The management of the Institute for Cardiomyopathies Heidelberg is in the hands of the Acting Director. He reports to the Board of Directors of the Heart Center Heidelberg, which consists of the three directors of Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery and Pediatric Cardiology. It determines the strategies and topics in coordination and executes the decisions. Furthermore, he represents the institute in all external areas. The acting director is supported in all matters by the coordination office.

The integrated special outpatient clinic serves as a contact point for all patients with cardiac muscle diseases, where they are cared for by the corresponding phenotype expert. The Precision Medicine Trial Unit also offers patients the opportunity to take part in innovative studies and thus contribute to the faster transfer of research into clinical application. All members meet once a month to discuss current cases and topics and to take appropriate decisions.

Phenotype experts

The institute has phenotype experts for all types of cardiomyopathies: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC / AC), amyloidosis , dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), hypertrophic (obstructive) cardiomyopathy (HCM / HOCM), inflammatory cardiomyopathy, syndrome of Brugada ( CPV) repolarization syndrome, Familial sinus syndrome, Familial atrial fibrillation, Short QT syndrome, Long QT syndrome), cardio-oncology, left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy (LVNC), metabolic cardiomyopathy, peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM), restrictive cardiomyopathy , Tako Tsubo cardiomyopathy , skeletal muscle diseases.

In addition, there is an interdisciplinary team of experts in the areas of heart failure , heart transplantation , interventional cardiomyopathy treatment, cardiac surgery , pediatric cardiology / congenital heart defects, imaging (MRT / CT), genetic diagnostics, molecular therapy development, cardiovascular physiology.

goals and tasks

The institute's activities aim to provide the best possible clinical care for cardiomyopathy patients. It also sees itself as a focal point of an innovative and networked research landscape for all facets of cardiomyopathy diseases, as well as a central information and contact point.

The focus is on:

  • a specialized outpatient clinic for all forms of myocardial diseases with the latest diagnostic and treatment methods and interdisciplinary cooperation
  • innovative and translational research with the most modern research infrastructure
  • a clinical study center linked to the high-end biomaterial bank (HCB) and a cardiomyopathy registry
  • structured promotion of young talent and qualified further training
  • an information center with events for patients and medical colleagues at national and international level and extensive information material on myocardial diseases

Events and activities

In addition to patient events with key topics, advanced training events for doctors take place every six months in cooperation with the Heidelberg-Mannheim Quality Circle of Cardiologists. Every two years an international scientific symposium on the current state of research is organized. Since it was founded, a team has volunteered at the Heidelbergman Heartbreak Triathlon every year.

The Institute for Cardiomyopathies Heidelberg is part of various research structures such as B. the German Center for Cardiovascular Research eV (DZHK) and the newly initiated consortium Informatics for life, the first Heidelberg institute for artificial intelligence with a focus on cardiovascular diseases with the participating partner institutions: Heidelberg University Hospital , Center for Scientific Computing , Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Sciences (HITS), European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
