The Institute for Music Therapy is a university training center and part of the Vienna State University for Music and Performing Arts in Austria .
The music therapy is established at the mdw since 1959th In 2003 it became an independent department at the Institute for Music and Movement Education / Rhythmics and Music Physiology, and since 2016 it has been its own institute.
This makes Vienna - together with London - one of the oldest music therapy training centers in Europe. The music therapy course serves as an artistic, therapeutic and scientific preparatory training for music therapy activities in the clinical area, in rehabilitation, in geriatrics as well as in curative and special education .
Music therapy is an independent, scientific-artistic-creative and expressive form of therapy. It encompasses the conscious and planned treatment of people, in particular with emotional, somatic, intellectual or social behavior disorders and states of suffering, through the use of musical means in a therapeutic relationship between one or more treated persons and one or more treatment persons.
In 2010 a chair was established for the first time in the scientific field. At the Music Therapy Department, the focus of both basic research and applied clinical research is on music-physiological and neurobiological research. Form the focus of the department
- Music effects research using neuroscientific methods (psychophysiological investigations, structural and functional imaging),
- Music therapy for children and adolescents (practical research projects; effectiveness studies of music therapeutic interventions in prevention and therapy, family therapeutic approaches),
- Music therapy in neonatology in the music therapeutic treatment of risk groups, such as premature babies and children of addicted mothers.
