The Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences ( Chinese  中国科学院 古 脊椎动物 与 古 人类 研究所 , Pinyin Zhongguo kexueyuan Gujizhui dongwu yu gurenlei yanjiusuo , English Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. IVPP ) is an IVPP Academy of Sciences of the Chinese leading institution for the study of fossils of vertebrates and early humans in the people's Republic of China .

The institute, based in Beijing, is also a collection center; Many finds of dinosaurs , pterosaurs and primeval birds are kept in its scientific collection as well as in the attached Chinese Paleozoological Museum .

As the name suggests, the institute's staff conduct research in the field of vertebrate paleontology and paleoanthropology . The institute emerged from the “Research Laboratory for New Earth Era” founded in 1929 (today's name since 1960); within the Chinese Academy of Sciences , it functions as an independent research facility. Its employees also publish their research results in international journals . Between 1999 and 2005, 45 members of the institute were authors or co-authors of scientific publications in Nature and Science . The institute's outstanding paleontologists include Wu Xinzhi , Yang Zhongjian (CC Young), Dong Zhiming , Xu Xing , Zhou Zhonghe and Zhao Xijin .
