Zhao Xijin

Zhao Xijin ( Chinese  趙喜 進  /  赵喜 进 , Pinyin Zhào Xǐjìn , W.-G. Chao Hsi-chin ; * 1935 ; † July 21, 2012 ) was a Chinese vertebrate paleontologist who studied dinosaurs. He was a professor at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences .

Zhao is the last name. It is also abbreviated and quoted Chao.

He is known through numerous finds and initial descriptions . Many of the genera and species introduced by him in the 1980s (published in Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 1983 - only in a list - and 1985 in an anthology) are, however, uncertain and published only incompletely ( Nomina nuda ). Among the genera named by him are:

He worked with Philip Currie and Paul Sereno , among others . In 2001 he and Sereno unearthed the fossils of a herd of 25 young ostrich-like, feathery Sinornithomimus in the Gobi desert . According to the circumstances of the find, the animals got stuck in the mud when they tried to drink water by a lake. The findings show that the young of this type of dinosaur were left to their own devices in their own herd. Sereno of the University of Chicago also planned to visit a site in Tibet with Zhao again in 2004, where Zhao Xijin had unearthed many dinosaurs in the late 1970s that were the basis of his dissertation - but he had not returned and kept it Place secret.

In 2008 he found one of the largest dinosaur sites ever at Zhucheng (known for being dinosaur fossils since the 1960s) (over 3000 bones from ceratopsians, hadrosaurs, ankylosaurs). They date from the turn of the Cretaceous-Tertiary, when the dinosaurs became extinct along with many other taxa.
