Elena Cattaneo (born October 22, 1962 in Paladina ) is an Italian pharmacologist. She became the third woman to be appointed Senator for Life in Italy in 2013.

Life

After completing her doctorate in pharmaceuticals , she went to Boston in the United States for a few years , where she specialized at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . Back in Italy, she resumed her academic career at the University of Milan .

On August 30, 2013, Elena Cattaneo from President Giorgio Napolitano for a lifetime senator appointed. She is the youngest ever senator for life. In 2012 she was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea .

Cattaneo is the director of Stem Cell Biology and Pharmacology of Neurodegenerative Disease in Milan, which, along with 15 other laboratories, participates in the European project NeuroStemCell on stem cell research, which she coordinates.

Her research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases , particularly Huntington's disease .
